VMI Rated No. 1 Public Liberal Arts College
6th Year for Top U.S. News & World Report Ranking
LEXINGTON, Va., Aug. 17, 2006 -- For the sixth consecutive year U.S. News & World Report has ranked Virginia Military Institute as the No. 1 public liberal arts college in the nation. The ranking once again places VMI in the top tier of colleges and universities nationally.
“This ranking is another indicator that VMI offers one of the great educational opportunities in American higher education today,” said Brig. Gen. Charles F. Brower IV, Deputy Superintendent for Academics and Dean of the Faculty. “In addition to the academic excellence that this ranking indicates, VMI’s military environment provides a leadership education that few other colleges can match. The combination of outstanding academics and a rigorous military environment is what makes VMI graduates so successful in their careers, whether in the military or in the civilian sector.”
VMI’s engineering programs were included in the magazine’s list of the nation’s best undergraduate engineering programs at schools whose highest degree is a bachelor’s or master’s degree.
U.S. News considers such factors as a college’s reputation as rated by academic leaders nationally; the retention of students; class size; the quality of the faculty; the quality of students; financial resources; graduation rate performance; and the alumni giving rate.
The rankings are to be available on the U.S. News’s Web site Aug. 18, and are to be distributed in the Aug. 28 edition of the magazine and in its annual college guidebook, both of which will be available on Aug. 21.
Sharing the No. 1 ranking with VMI is the New College of Florida.
